Basic Wedding Ceremony Outline

When I am planning a wedding ceremony, I start with a template and then work with the couple to rearrange it (or blow it all up). Here are the major elements to consider:

  • Pre-ceremony

  • Entrance or procession

  • Opening words

  • Reflections and music from your community

  • Reflections from the celebrant

  • Transition to the marriage and confirmation of intent (“Do you want to be married?”)

  • Affirmations of support from the community,

  • Vows

  • Ring exchange

  • Pronouncement

  • Kiss and other “sealing” moments

  • Closing words

  • Exit

  • Time alone for the couple

  • Signing of the marriage certificate

  • Photos

  • Reception
